She is READING!!

That’s right!!  My precious little Baby Girl in Kindergarten is READING!!  Can you hear me singing the chorus to  “Glory, Glory Hallelujah” right about now?  I was really so unsure if this day would come.  Now, I KNOW that she just turned six a few weeks ago and I KNOW that I am totally exaggerating, but I have to admit {insert confession time here} that being patient and teaching these little blessings how to read is just not one of my strong points.  In fact at one point, it really terrified me!!

Let me back up a moment…  Josh and I have been so excited and felt called from God since Day 1 of becoming parents that we should homeschool our children but I have been terrified to teach them how to read.  Algebra?  Government?  Calculus?  Finance?  Chemistry?  Bring it on!!  But teaching phonics (I totally had to look up what that word even meant) and I was so scared when it came time to teach Caleb Davis but I did it!!  I learned how to teach phonics and now I have 3 readers under my belt and 3 more to go.

I took these photos a few weeks ago when Emma Lee read her 1st complete book.

She was thrilled to finally be able to add a book to her Reading List for kindergarten and so was this Mommy!!  Smile

I even let her use one of her Pizza Hut Book It! coupons just for reading this ONE book.  She still has a ways to go on her phonics/reading journey but I feel like we have turned the corner in her confidence by getting this 1st book read.

We are both looking forward to adding many, many more books to her list before the end of this school year.

What about you?  What are your little (and BIG) homeschool wins so far this school year?

Monthly Lesson Plans - March 2014

I just wanted to pop in her real quick to share my monthly lesson plans.  I posted a picture over on Instagram + Facebook yesterday and I had several Moms asking me to make it larger so here goes ladies…

This is something a little different for me this month.  I usually do not plan a month ahead like this but I wanted to give it a try.  You know test out the waters before I revamp things for the next school year.  I have just always had the weekly/monthly plan in my head and then recorded what we actually accomplished on a different form but I think this little bit of extra planning for the month will help me out and keep us on track for the remainder of the school year.  I still plan to continue with my weekly record sheet, which shows what we actually accomplish each week.

I would prefer a different monthly format than this one but I just have not figured out how to do that on 1 page for the whole family yet.  Anyone else got a better solution than this?  I do not want to keep plans or records for each individual child – too much paper each week, in my opinion.  Plus, there is just a lot of activities + subjects that we do together so I do not see the point in copying all that same information multiple times.

Please keep in mind that this monthly lesson plan is just that a plan!!  I really do not expect us to accomplish all this each and every week.  We will have setbacks and fun field trips, just like all of you.  I just wanted to set some year end goals for us this year and then back track a few months to see what we needed to accomplish these next few weeks to make those goals happen.  What that really means is that I do not want to be doing grammar + spelling all month long.  Ha!!

What about you?  How do you keep your homeschool lesson plans or recording each week/month?  I would love to hear from you!!
